I believe the idea of doing the women's movement as our topic for the Living Newspaper project in class is something to think about. There is some major points that we could cover while also comparing and contrasting women from todays society and women from the past. We could further explore sexisim and economical issues that pertain to women. For example if a man and a woman are competing for the same job and have the same qualities and skills, and the man gets hired over the woman. Would that be considered favoritism or sexisim?
We can also incorporate music by strong, independent female artists into our Living Newspaper project, as long with media clips, pictures from the past and present, and feminist artwork that truly relates to the issue at hand. This was a strong issue in the past and is also a current issue as well so finding resources and information to go along with this topic should not be that challenging. This is definitely a topic that should be considered when choosing our final project topic.
Catherine, I think you present some nice ideas here. One thing I might caution you against is the past/present comparison. While it seems right now that such a comparison will only be giving you so much research, the resources on this topic are really abundant. I think this will quickly lead to overwhelming research. Because, really you'll want to not only see what people who are in favor of the split between men's and women's salaries are saying, but those who are not in favor or those who think it is not really an issue as well. Covering all the different viewpoints on an issue will give the group plenty of research to work with in a given time period, as you'll want to inform yourselves about the counterarguments to the viewpoint you ultimately select. Which time period about this issue interests you most?
ReplyDeleteMaybe we could show how things have progressed since the past and even explore where things could go in the future. I really like the idea of using by strong independent women, obviously everyone can relate to music in one way or another and it is something that really grasps everyone's attention. Maybe we could look at major steps for women starting with the right to vote up until today and take significant events and work them into almost a timeline of the up and coming of women
